Listed by Beta Alpha Psi, Alpha Iota Chapter

About

MISC: Must be able to attend a pre-meeting (February 18, 2020, 5:00 – 7:00) to organize and prepare . Dress for school presentation is casual (please do not dress up; the students need to feel like we are one of them).

PURPOSE:

Help Prairie Grove Junior High School Student Council learn what it takes to set up a school store, from baseline accounting to advertising.

BACKGROUND:

Prairie Grove is a rural town about 10 miles west of Fayetteville. PGJHS has approximately 300 students and 2 grades (7th and 8th). A few of the school buildings have been condemned. PGSD will eventually rebuild the school, but as of now, it is in poor condition. PGJHS Student Council is in its second year. There are 20 students involved. They do various fundraising projects throughout the school year. Part of their fundraising money is to go toward a gift for the school (i.e. a plaque from the class of 2024).

PROJECT:

  • Presentation at beginning. Each student should understand the accounting and marketing strategies, but naturally kids will gravitate to different parts.
  • Small groups of 4-5 students, work with them to hear their ideas – teach them how to use different tools
  • Create template for simple inventory management system, easy enough for kids to understand
    • Organize inventory by SKU?
    • Show how much you have and when to reorder?
  • What kinds of inventory are best?
  • Create template for kids to do a weekly income statement
  • Teach kids how to use receipt books efficiently
  • What types of marketing would be most effective?
    • Posters? Adverts in the weekly newsletter? Flyers?
  • How do you effectively word advertisements?
