About

This year's conference, February 13th-16th, features a week-long schedule comprised of four main topics: civic engagement, sense of place, refugee processes, and empathy. These areas are viewed through intersectional lenses, including the black experience and Marshallese and Hispanic culture and history. The conference will be collaborating with the Multicultural Center, the Marshallese Educational Initiative, Students with Refugees, SAFE, Zero Dark Hour, CAPS, and more.

Dr. Angela Mosley-Monts, the Vice Chancellor of Inclusion and Diversity for the university, will be joining us to speak on civic engagement and its intersection with the black experience. The Multicultural Center is also in collaborating for Black History Month.

Daisy Bonilla is active in the NWA politically having run to be a representative, and is also a proponent for mental health and Hispanic communities through her work. She will be speaking on the intersection of Hispanic cultures and civic engagement.

The Marshallese Educational Initiative will be presenting on the effects of nuclear testing on the Marshall Island and its intersection with climate change. SAFE and Zero Dark Hour will host a letter writing workshop as well.

Dr. Perla Guerrero, author of "Nuevo South: Latinas/os, Asians, and the Remaking of Place," will be joining us to discuss sense of place in Northwest Arkansas. By learning about the many communities which make up NWA, we are better able to include and move forward in a beneficial way together.

"What is a Refugee?" will be presented by CanopyNWA in an effort to inform NWA about what constitutes a refugee. In an area where refugees live, it is important to educate ourselves to become better allies.
